Sims 4 Auto Decorator
Status: under review
Intended use: Sims 4 (base game)
Date: 12/21/2023
Overview
Part of the Sims gaming experience is Sim autonomy. Including an auto decorate function provides a new dimension to game-play. Sims would be enabled to update lot decor and elements, improving upon the overall aesthetics and environment.
Value
Adding this feature revamps and deepens environments; and is driven by a Sim's traits/abilities relative to shaping of the space. Decor becomes a reflection of Sim's taste level.
Solution
A Sim would (based on budget, traits, skills) replace an in-game object with a new one (or item currently in inventory). Replaced objects would be found in the player's inventory. To replace (or place) a new object, Sim has to determine at least the following: Is new object is available? Is there available space for the object? Will new object fit into space? Auto decorating Sims would need to not place items such that the object blocks other objects (this also includes pathways like doors).
Evaluation
Proceeding with this feature requires having a handle on the mechanics of objects (and their spatial limitations). For example, a Sim with a high logic rating can upgrade a chess board with a board of higher value; Sims could also decide to update wallpaper (textures).
Pros
• Base game feature.
• Enables a more expressive Sim.
• Adds a new dimension to game-play.
• Convenient for players who are not interested in doing the decorating, yet enjoy a well-designed space.
• Creates opportunity to add new threshold/tuning settings relative to the feature.
Cons
• Excessive if the decoration happens too frequently.
• If spatial mechanism not working as intended, game-play is distorted.
Counter-args
• How frequently does the Sim need to decorate?
• Could a multi-Sim household have clashing decor styles?
• What if a Sim spends too much money?
• Is it possible to limit this to objects currently in inventory?
• Can items be whitelisted from being replaced?
